UK Gov reveals legal framework for intercepting all citizens’ social media communications

Basically the interpretation is that since the servers on which these services are hosted are in foreign countries, they are classed as “external communications”, which allows them to intercept them indiscriminately as opposed to needing a warrant. This also applies to webmail services and Google searches.

Sharp Develops Free-Form Display, Enables Vastly Greater Design Freedom for Displays

Sharp announces the development of the Free-Form Display, a device that can be shaped to meet a wide range of user needs thanks to the incorporation of IGZO technology and proprietary circuit design methods. Conventional displays are rectangular because they require a minimal width for the bezel in order to accommodate the drive circuit, called the gate driver, around the perimeter of the screen’s display area. With the Free-Form Display, the gate driver’s function is dispersed throughout the pixels on the display area. This allows the bezel to be shrunk considerably, and it gives the freedom to design the LCD to match whatever shape the display area of the screen needs to be.

Project un1c0rn – a search engine for (heartbleed, Mysql, Mongodb) vulnerable sites

Think of Project Un1c0rn as a Google for site security. Launched on May 15th, the site’s creators say that so far it has indexed 59,000 websites and counting. The goal, according to its founders, is to document open leaks caused by the Heartbleed bug, as well as “access to users’ databases” in Mongo DB and MySQL.

According to the developers, those three types of vulnerabilities are most widespread because they rely on commonly used tools.[…]

“Billions of people are leaving information and trails in billions of different databases, some just left with default configurations that can be found in a matter of seconds for whoever has the resources,” SweetCorn said. Changing and updating passwords is a crucial practice.

Evidence that the moon was formed by impact between Earth and planet Theia

How did the Moon form? According to the prevailing hypothesis, a Mars-sized body known as Theia smashed into Earth. Herwartz et al. analyzed fresh basalt samples from three Apollo landing sites and compared them with several samples of Earth’s mantle. The oxygen isotope values measured in these lunar rocks differ significantly from the terrestrial material, supporting the giant-impact hypothesis.

Tesla Motors helps humanity, opens their patents

Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology

Agreed entirely – patents are bludgeoning tools in the hands of the only ones who can afford them: big companies. They stop progress, kill innovation. Well done Tesla!

Major terrorism trial could be held in secret for first time in UK legal history

“the evidence on which the crown relied to argue for the secret trial could not be presented in open court”

“This appeal raises important issues relating to the constitutional principle of open justice but also the equally important principle of fairness and natural justice,” Hudson told the court.”

This culture of secrecy and non-accountability towards the public is a hugely growing and worrying Orwellian trend.

Patent royalties in Smart Phones < 1/3rd of the end price. Shows again stupidity of patent system

for such a phone [$400 RRP], the potential patent royalties could exceed US$120 per device. This brings the licensing fees per device close to the cost of components, which on the US$400 phone would be somewhere between US$120 and US$150.

"… those costs may be undermining industry profitability—and, in turn, diminishing incentives to invest and compete

via High smartphone patent royalties undermine industry profitability: report – Strategy – Business – News – iTnews.com.au.

Again and again this shows what a ridiculous system patents are and how they hurt our society. Fair enough that patents protect the inventor for a few years – enough to get a competitive advantage – but ridiculous that people keep earning for ever without lifting a finger. Then of course it’s usually not the inventor that makes the money as they can’t afford the patent process, but patent trolls or large companies who extort the patents off the inventor. And there are the patents that are disallowed to certain companies, meaning they can’t use a widely known system. Or are taken of the market entirely until someone else manages to circumvent an old patent and equal the old technology.

Google starts to implement right to be forgotten

A recent ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union found that certain users can ask search engines to remove results for queries that include their name where those results are inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant, or excessive in relation to the purposes for which they were processed.

In implementing this decision, we will assess each individual request and attempt to balance the privacy rights of the individual with the public’s right to know and distribute information. When evaluating your request, we will look at whether the results include outdated information about you, as well as whether there’s a public interest in the information—for example, information about financial scams, professional malpractice, criminal convictions, or public conduct of government officials.

Regrow your teeth with lasers!

We show that non-ionizing, low-power laser (LPL) treatment can instead be used as a minimally invasive tool to activate an endogenous latent growth factor complex, transforming growth factor–β1 (TGF-β1), that subsequently differentiates host stem cells to promote tissue regeneration. LPL treatment induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a dose-dependent manner, which, in turn, activated latent TGF-β1 (LTGF-β1) via a specific methionine residue (at position 253 on LAP). Laser-activated TGF-β1 was capable of differentiating human dental stem cells in vitro. Further, an in vivo pulp capping model in rat teeth demonstrated significant increase in dentin regeneration after LPL treatment. These in vivo effects were abrogated in TGF-β receptor II (TGF-βRII) conditional knockout (DSPPCreTGF-βRIIfl/fl) mice or when wild-type mice were given a TGF-βRI inhibitor. These findings indicate a pivotal role for TGF-β in mediating LPL-induced dental tissue regeneration. More broadly, this work outlines a mechanistic basis for harnessing resident stem cells with a light-activated endogenous cue for clinical regenerative applications

Police voice recording systems hackable with backdoors

"NICE Recording eXpress is designed specifically for the audio recording needs of the small and medium sized Public Safety organisation. This advanced recording solution offers a comprehensive, advanced, easy-to-install and affordable platform built for the Public Safety environment and Command and Control operations delivering optimal recording functionality and quality management."

Business recommendation: ========================

Attackers are able to completely compromise the voice recording / surveillance solution as they can gain access to the system and database level and listen to recorded calls without prior authentication. Furthermore, attackers would be able to use the voice recording server as a jumphost for further attacks of the internal voice VLAN, depending on the network setup.

NVidia optimised games are being crippled for AMD by NVidia

Because NVidia has a program called Gameworks, which developers can sign up for to optimise their game for NVidia cards – 60% of the market. The closed and proprietary Gameworks makes it almost impossible to optimse for AMD, which means that $500,- AMD cards perform worse than $300,- NVidia cards, unless the developer has spent a huge time and investment from the start of the project to optimise for both brands. AMD can’t fix this with a driver update, because reverse engineering the NVidia Gamesworks is difficult and the system is filled with obscure cruft and worthless junk, making it difficult to find out how to optimise the driver for it.

Recruiters look at your CV like this: Eye tracking study

Interestingly, recruiters spend only 6 seconds reviewing an individual resume!

They spend that time looking at:
Name
Current title / company
Previous title / company
Previous position start and end dates
Current position start and end dates
Education

If you add a picture, they spend 19% of that time looking at the picture, not the information.

Professionally re-written resumes score 60% better on “usability” – they are easier to read.

Professional resumes had less data, were evenly formatted and
were described as “clearer.” They scored 40% better than before a re-write.

Note that the study is commissioned by TheLadders, a professional CV writing company, so the results are clearly interpreted in their favor, but the above points remain valid.
