Molecular condom vs AIDS

Utah scientists have developed a liquid that turns semi solid in the presence of semen, trapping the AIDS virus. If a woman uses the liquid before sex, sperm gets trapped in a gel like structure. By the time the gel melts into liquid, the AIDS virus has died. So it’s not a sure fire contraceptive, but good for the most virulent and dangerous sexual disease. Now if they can only get it to solidify for ALL sexually transmitted diseases…

This is where CCTV leads to!

Of course only in the jolly old UK:

The Children’s Secretary set out £400million plans to put 20,000 problem families under 24-hour CCTV super-vision in their own homes

They will be monitored to ensure that children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals.

Private security guards will also be sent round to carry out home checks, while parents will be given help to combat drug and alcohol addiction.

The best bit? They’ve allready put 2000 families through this!

Interorbital Tube Sat

For $8000 you can launch your own satellite into low earth orbit at 310 km. It’ll stay up there for around 3 weeks untill it burns up in reentry. They come in kit form and you can stuff whatever you want in there as long as it weighs less than 0.75 kg and fits into the tube they send you. You can double, triple or quadruple the tubesat, allowing you to launch greater payloads. They will be launched on Interobital’s Neptune rocket, which carries 32 tubesats per time. They expect to launch 1 rocket per month from 2010 from the IOS Spaceport Tonga.

UCSniff updated

UCSniff can be placed on a laptop and put in a network where it will VLAN hop untill it finds the VoIP VLAN channel. It then throws out spoofed ARP packets like a man-in-the-middle attack and gets all voice and video traffic thrown to itself. Together with a plugin called VideoJak they can then insert video loops into the stream, meaning that whoever sees the camera output (the guard) will only see the loop and not what the webcam is seeing.

‘Take Back the Beep’ Campaign

David Pogue is waging war on those carriers that make you listen to a stupid canned message from them after you listen to a personal voicemail message. Those 15 seconds of canned bullshit are there to make you rack up mobile expenses.

One way to avoid them is to press:

*-1-# in a row

This is because the secret skip the message code is different for each carrier and this should get them all.

How to bypass stupid voicemail instructions

There are loads of ways to complain in the US to your carrier – we should start this in Europe as well!

Dutch courts go nuts again

The Pirate Bay has been told to block access to Dutch users in some magical fashion during a court session in which the subpoena’s were delivered via Twitter and Facebook and the defendants were not able to come to the courtroom to defend themselves. They sent a written response, but this was ignored due to their non presence.

Is this the beginning of the end of free speech on internet in the Netherlands? If it’s up to the SS like stichting Brein it is: and they’ll be the arbiters of what we are and aren’t allowed to see.

iPhone virus: Patch!

Who said Apples don’t get virusses? In a one character SMS message, an attacker can take over your phone entirely: turn on or off the camera, send the contacts list, dial out, etc etc etc.

Oddly enough the first people to patch it are the people Apple is intent on stopping from working on software for the iPhone: the jailbreakers!

Installing Homebrew Apps op the Pre

The aptly-named “WebOS Quick Install” from our very own Jason Robitaille. It’s a simple desktop Java-based app that you can download and install on a Mac, PC or Linux machine. First, install the webOS SDK (Update, version 1.1 has just been released and it uses the Recovery ROM – take a quick look at the notes on the linked post), then you just need to put your Pre into Developer Mode and then run the app on your desktop (Mac users note the small caveat in the readme file). You can drag and drop files downloaded from our Homebrew Apps forum into the app, click install, and you. are. done.
