Tight-wad Apple repair techs swapped our damaged iGear with used kit – lawsuit

According to the complaint, the aggrieved customers say that their AppleCare service plans should allow them to have their devices replaced with new units. The class seeks to represent customers who purchased Apple hardware with the AppleCare replacement plan and then received replacement devices from Apple when their old devices broke.

The claim centers around the plaintiffs’ own definition of “new,” alleging that the only replacements they should have received under their AppleCare replacement plans were in fact brand new hardware, not units that were factory refurbished by Apple.

“The Apple Plans purport to provide consumers with devices that are ‘equivalent to new in performance and reliability.’ What that phrase means is ‘new,’ as refurbished devices can never be the equivalent to new in performance and reliability,” the filing reads.

Have Your iPhone 6 Repaired, Only To Get It Bricked By Apple

In case you had a problem with the fingerprint sensor or some other small defect on your iPhone 6 and had it repaired by a non-official (read: cheaper) shop, you may be in for a nasty surprise: error 53. What happens is that during an OS update or re-install the software checks the internal hardware and if it detects a non-Apple component, it will display an error 53 and brick your phone. Any photos or other data held on the handset is lost – and irretrievable.

Wow, how evil is that?! Is it even legal? I mean, you bought the device, how do they justify sabotaging someone else’s property?

Apple says it doesn’t know why iTunes users are losing their music files

In an extremely small number of cases users have reported that music files saved on their computer were removed without their permission. We’re taking these reports seriously as we know how important music is to our customers and our teams are focused on identifying the cause. We have not been able to reproduce this issue, however, we’re releasing an update to iTunes early next week which includes additional safeguards. If a user experiences this issue they should contact AppleCare.

Apple’s Safari browser is crashing on iPhones and Macs worldwide – turn off search suggestions helps.

Apple’s Safari browser appears to be experiencing issues worldwide this morning. Searching from the address bar in both iOS and OS X is causing the browser to crash in some instances. The Verge has confirmed the problem on several of our own iOS devices and at least one OS X machine.”Safari’s search suggestions are to blame”Steven Troughton-Smith, an iOS developer, notes that the problems are related to Safari’s search suggestions feature. Simply disabling this feature will stop Safari crashing, or using the private mode option in the browser as a temporary workaround

Apple Deleted Rivals’ Songs from Users’ iPods

When a user who had downloaded music from a rival service tried to sync an iPod to the user’s iTunes library, Apple would display an error message and instruct the user to restore the factory settings, Coughlin said. When the user restored the settings, the music from rival services would disappear, he said.

Apple’s iPhone Tracking you again In iOS 6

IFA or IDFA stands for “identifier for advertisers.” It’s a random, anonymous number that is assigned to a user and their device. It is temporary and can be blocked, like a cookie.

When you look at an app, or browse the web, your presence generates a call for an ad. The publisher’s site that you’re looking at then passes the IFA to the ad server. The advertiser is then able to know that a specific iPhone user is looking at a specific publication and can serve an ad targeting that user. IFA becomes particularly useful, for instance, if an ad server notices that a particular IFA is looking at a lot of different car sites. Perhaps that user is interested in buying a new car. They’ll likely start seeing a lot of car ads on their iPhone.

More importantly, IFA will allow advertisers to track the user all the way to “conversion” — which for most advertisers consists of an app download. Previously, advertisers had no idea whether their ads actually drove people to download apps or buy things. Now IFA will tell them.

The IFA does not identify you personally — it merely provides a bunch of aggregate audience data that advertisers can target with ads.

How Apple has a shitload more profit not on the books and not taxed in the US

Apple’s foreign profits are funneled through different countries to reside in a country where there is no or little tax on profits. They don’t pay taxes in the US untill the money is repatriated to the US, but they do mark a portion of the money as being taxed in the US and take that off their books. This means that there are lower profit figures than they actually have allthough the money is still in foreign accounts.

How Apple's phantom taxes hide billions in profit.
