NIST team proves ‘spooky action at a distance’ is really real

As described in a paper posted online and submitted to Physical Review Letters (PRL), researchers from NIST and several other institutions created pairs of identical light particles, or photons, and sent them to two different locations to be measured. Researchers showed the measured results not only were correlated, but also—by eliminating all other known options—that these correlations cannot be caused by the locally controlled, “realistic” universe Einstein thought we lived in. This implies a different explanation such as entanglement.

Massive Hack of 70 Million Prisoner Phone Calls Indicates Violations of Attorney-Client Privilege – calls recorded and searchable

The materials — leaked via SecureDrop by an anonymous hacker who believes that Securus is violating the constitutional rights of inmates — comprise over 70 million records of phone calls, placed by prisoners to at least 37 states, in addition to links to downloadable recordings of the calls. The calls span a nearly two-and-a-half year period, beginning in December 2011 and ending in the spring of 2014. Particularly notable within the vast trove of phone records are what appear to be at least 14,000 recor

MiGFlug – Jet Fighter Flights in Supersonic Military Fighter Aircraft

With MiGFlug, you can fly a real fighter jet – even if you’ve never flown a plane on your own before! One of our experienced flight instructors will be carefully preparing you for the flight, explaining about the instruments and finally taking off with you. During the jet flight, if you wish to do so, you will even get the chance to operate the jet by yourself and perform stunning manoeuvres in the jet fighter aircraft. The flight consists of manoeuvres like loops, rolls, immelman turns and, depending on the aircraft and location, spectacular low-passes above the airfield as well as supersonic flights. Our pilots will adjust the flight to your wishes whenever possible. Together, you will ensure that your day as a fighter pilot will be the day of your life.

How to Create an Untraceable Messaging Device With an Old Phone

Secret, anonymous messages aren’t just for the dastardly. Luckily, a little privacy isn’t difficult to get. With some effort and a spare phone, you’ll be whistleblowing, protecting your privacy from harassers, and staying anonymous when selling on Craigslist or looking for dates on Match. Here’s how.

European Parliament votes to grant Snowden protection from US

In an unexpected vote, MEPs narrowly approved a measure that calls on EU member states to “drop any criminal charges against Edward Snowden, grant him protection, and consequently prevent extradition or rendition by third parties, in recognition of his status as whistle-blower and international human rights defender.”

The 285-281 vote came amid a long response from Parliamentarians irritated with the European Commission for not having done enough to respond to the revelations of US mass surveillance first revealed by Snowden back in 2013.

Although it represents a bold statement of support to the former NSA staffer, it does not mean he should pack his bags and catch the next flight to Berlin: the vote is not in any way binding on EU member states, and any European country that welcomed Snowden in would find itself under enormous pressure from the United States government to hand him over. The US has long-standing extradition treaties with all European countries.

3D Printed Hair

We introduce a technique for 3D printing soft strands, fibers, and bristles using conventional 3D printers. Our work was inspired by the phenomenon that occurs during the operation of a handheld glue gun: when a person extrudes hot glue material and moves the gun away, a “string” of residue often forms unintentionally. The shape, length, and thickness of the resulting stringy material varies based on how much glue was extruded and how fast the user moves away from the extrusion point. This artifact often annoys users, but in this work, we exploit the phenomenon.

Micorsoft will FORCE Windows 10 on you in next year’s auto-upgrade.

Do you want virus outbreaks? Because that’s how you get ’em

But deciding to make the upgrade part of the patching cycle is a grave mistake. True, it’s only going to be an optional upgrade at the moment, but by early next year the pressure is going to be raised, and anyone who automatically installs recommended security patches will find themselves with a new operating system waiting to start.

And just about everyone installs recommended updates automatically because Microsoft insists on it.

Scientists announce progress toward better battery to power cars – lithium-oxygen

Researchers at the University of Cambridge on Thursday announced the creation of a laboratory demonstration model of a lithium-oxygen battery that overcomes many of the barriers that have held back the development of this technology.

They said the battery boasts very high energy density, is about 93 percent efficient – better than previous efforts – and can be recharged more than 2,000 times.

‘Zeno effect’ verified, Heisenberg uncertainty principle controlled: Atoms won’t move while you watch

The researchers observed the atoms under a microscope by illuminating them with a separate imaging laser. A light microscope can’t see individual atoms, but the imaging laser causes them to fluoresce, and the microscope captured the flashes of light. When the imaging laser was off, or turned on only dimly, the atoms tunneled freely. But as the imaging beam was made brighter and measurements made more frequently, the tunneling reduced dramatically.“This gives us an unprecedented tool to control a quantum system, perhaps even atom by atom,[…]Using this tuning, we’ve also been able to demonstrate an effect called ‘emergent classicality’ in this quantum system.” Quantum effects fade, and atoms begin to behave as expected under classical physics.

The famous Heisenberg uncertainty principle says that position and velocity of a particle are related and cannot be simultaneously measured precisely.

Mimic, the Evil Script That Will Drive Programmers To Insanity

Mimic implements a devilishly sick idea floated on Twitter by Peter Ritchie: “Replace a semicolon (;) with a Greek question mark (;) in your friend’s C# code and watch them pull their hair out over the syntax error.” There are quite a few characters in the Unicode character set that look, to some extent or another, like others – homoglyphs. Mimic substitutes common ASCII characters for obscure homoglyphs. Caution: using this script may get you fired and/or beaten to a pulp.
