Vortex Ring Gun fires gas at 90 mph

The gun forms vortex rings by forcing air or some other gas at high velocity down the gun’s cylinder. The ring forms when the friction of the cylinder wall causes a thin layer of the gas to roll forward on itself like a donut. Imagine a tornado formed into a donut shape. The ring revolves on itself while traveling out the cylinder and it can maintain that stability for long distances. Depending on the size of the gun, Battelle data confirms that a ring vortex can exit a generator at 90 miles per hour and maintain a speed of at least 60 mph for more than 50 yards.

Open Ministry: Finnish crowd sourced lawmaking

From the start of March, the new Citizens’ Initiative Act will come into force.
According to the new law, a required minimum of 50,000 citizens of voting age can launch a bill that Parliament then has to process.
On the Open Ministry website, anyone can present an idea for a law initiative. If the idea wins enough support, the ministry’s volunteer workers will work on it and turn it into a presentable bill for the MPs to chew over.

From the beginning of March, citizens’ initiative bills can be sent for parliamentary handling if they are signed by 50,000 people entitled to vote

Assessing ACTA: Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law

This report concludes that ACTA’s harm greatly exceeds its potential benefits. Given ACTA’s corrosive effect on transparency in international negotiations, the damage to international intellectual property institutions, the exclusion of the majority of the developing world from the ambit of the agreement, the potentially dangerous substantive provisions, and the uncertain benefits in countering counterfeiting, there are ample reasons for the public and politicians to reject the agreement in its current form. In doing so, governments would help restore confidence in the global intellectual property system and open the door to a new round of negotiations premised on transparency, inclusion, and evidence-based policy-making

Earthquake protection through levitating houses

Japanese Air Danshin Systems has come up with a system that levitates houses on a 3cm layer of pressurised air during an earthquake. They claim the system is one third of the price of existing anti-earthquake systems and will be installed in 88 houses across Japan.
