Gym machines are boring, CrossFit is sadistic, and dieting sucks. Luckily, none of them is essential to being truly fit. Through years of trial and error — and humiliation at the hands of some of the world’s top trainers — the author discovered the secrets to real health.

The German Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration recently reported the development of a camera with a lens attached that is 1 x 1 x 1.5 millimeters in size, which is the size of a grain of salt. At about a cubic millimeter in size, this camera is right at the size limit that the human eye can see unaided. The camera not only produces decent images but it is also very cheap to manufacture…so cheap in fact that it is considered disposable.

Background: In 2009, the EU discussed the issue of a term extension for the ”neighbouring rights” that record companies have to recorded music. These neighbouring rights are now 50 years from the recording of a song. The proposal was to extend them to 95 years. After a lively debate in the European Parliament, it was decided to extend them to 70 years. Then the issue got stuck in the Council of Ministers, where several countries (including Sweden and Denmark) felt that no extension was necessary. Now it appears that the Danish government has folded, which means that there is no longer a blocking minority in the Council.
Right now: On the agenda for the meeting of the European Parliament’s legal affairs committee JURI this Monday and Tuesday, there has appeared a point about making certain formal corrections to the text that the European Parliament adopted (such as the date when the new rules should enter into force). It appears that they have been trying to give the issue a low profile. The documents were not sent out to members of the JURI committee until last Friday, after we had explicitly asked for them.
Copyright term extension will be voted this week « Christian Engström, Pirate MEP.

A new study by Forrester Research found that maintaining a Facebook presence is less effective at drumming up business than plain old email newsletters or search ads. Companies interviewed for the study “received little benefits from Facebook,” according to the Wall Street Journal. Another recent study found that even print ads were better at fostering consumer engagement with brands than a Facebook page. Hundreds of thousands of people may “like” a brand’s Facebook page, but they don’t actually like it

A study conducted by the Dutch calculators came up with the conclusion that open source didn’t save any money. Not so, says the MOD – they didn’t take into account things like the same costs incurred for 2500 users are now spent to service 6000 users, a savings of 66%!

The law obliges a range of e-commerce sites, video and music services and webmail providers to keep a host of data on customers.
This includes users’ full names, postal addresses, telephone numbers and passwords. The data must be handed over to the authorities if demanded.
This means that the data which is handed over can be used to access your accounts.

The Eindhoven suspension is not only electromagnetic but also active, meaning that it doesn’t just mechanically respond to bumps in the road, but is controlled by an onboard computer. That computer receives input from accelerometers and other sensors on the vehicle, and adjusts the suspension accordingly within a fraction of a second. While active suspension is nothing new (at least, not for cars), it has previously mainly been integrated into hydraulic systems. According to the Eindhoven researchers, however, hydraulics can’t react as quickly as their electromagnetic system, and therefore can’t match the smoothness of its ride.
…
With a peak consumption of 500 watts, the suspension uses about a quarter of the power of hydraulic systems. It also stretches its battery life by using road vibrations to generate electricity. The designers believe that with refinements, the suspension’s energy-efficiency could be improved even further.

The European Union’s new point person on copyright policy won’t take up her post until mid-April, but she’s already stirring up controversy. That’s because Maria Martin-Prat spent years directing “global legal policy” for IFPI, the global recording industry’s London-based trade group, before moving back into government. The appointment raises new questions about the past private-sector work of government officials, especially those crafting policy or issuing legal judgments on the same issues they once lobbied for.
The US has judges who used to be music industry lawyers sitting on copyright cases – I thought the EU had more sense than installing people with such clear conflicts of interests.

When Facebook moved its servers to HipHop for PHP – the code transformer it built to convert PHP into optimized C++ – the company’s average CPU usage dropped by 50 per cent. And after six months of additional engineering, the tool was about 1.8 times faster.
Now, after another six months, the company says, it has improved performance another 1.7 times. But this is more than just self-congratulation. The project is open source, and it has been open since Facebook first switched its servers to HipHop in February 2010.

Now this is from MS themselves, so obviously they’ll have picked sites which work best for IE, but most importantly it shows that there is a huge variability in the amount of power each browser uses. This is not only useful for laptop users who want to maximise their batteries, but also for the global power consumption, considering the browser is what most people use continuously on their computer.
And no one sees any conflict of interest?!
While many judges around the country are throwing out file sharing lawsuits on account of questionable or faulty arguments, DC federal judge Beryl Howell just recently allowed three cases filed by copyright holders to proceed. What makes it intriguing is that she used to be a former RIAA lobbyist.

Nearly all the energy we use on this planet starts out as sunlight that plants use to knit chemical bonds. Now, for the first time, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge have created a potentially cheap, practical artificial leaf that does much the same thing—providing a potentially limitless source of energy that’s easy to tap.
The new device is a silicon wafer about the shape and size of a playing card coated on either side with two different catalysts. The silicon absorbs sunlight and passes that energy to the catalysts to split water into molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is a fuel that can be either burned or used in a fuel cell to create electricity, reforming water in either case. This means that in theory, anyone with access to water can use it to create a cheap, clean, and available source of fuel.
