Jim Webb vs The US Prisons

For the land of the free, it’s a bit strange that the US has 25% of the global prison population – whilst only having 5% of the total population. Where Stalin had his gulags, the US is doing much much worse with its prisons. It has more of its own population behind bars than any other country!

Thankfully there’s a politician in there – Jim Webb – who thinks this is ridiculous and might actually stand a chance of doing something about it.

Deutsche SS Storm Wikileaks owners’ house

The German government has stormed Wikileaks’ owners house for ‘distribution of pornographic material’ after Wikileaks published the censorship lists of Australia and several other countries.
Is this a sign of the rising of the Fourth Reich – nip the opposers voices in the buds for complete control of your remaining, potty trained and scared shitless population?

The UK will lose your data one way or another

If the government isn’t handing out your personal data on USB sticks, laptops or just through their unsecure own networks, they’ll dump computers containing your hospital and patient data unencrypted on the streets for you to take home with you. They can’t give it away fast enough!

Now, let’s make a database with all the children in the UK in it! And a centralised ID scheme with all your biometric data in it! I’m sure whoever the government gives that to will love it.

Australia hates freedom too!

Yup, the Australians have a censorship list of websites that they’re blocking. The actual list is secret, but has now been unearthed! And – surprise surprise – it contains a whole load of sites that aren’t supposed to be on the list, such as legitimate businesses (who must have gotten on the wrong side of some politician there). Apparently the watchdog that runs the list is accountable to no one and can put whoever they don’t like on it. Well done the “free” world!

Cartoons of children and sex to be illegal in the UK

The bill, as it stands, would make it a criminal offence to possess (cartoon) pictures of children participating in sexual activities, or present whilst sexual activity took place

How silly is that then? You can’t have a drawing of a child in the neighbourhood of sex? Well, that makes the drawer of Bart Simpson with a penis a criminal. As well as I guess quite a bit of humor that has children walking into their parent’s bedroom as they’re having sex. As though that only happens to paedophile parents.

Jailbreak iPod Touch 3.0

Quite cleverly, before the release of iphone OS 3.0, it has allready been jailbroken. OS 3 will finally add such basic concepts such as MMS and copy and paste – only around 2 years after the release of the thing – as well as a search feature. Wow. Basic functionalities. About bloody time. Oh. And if you’re an ipod touch user, you’ll have to pay $9.99 for the privelige of having something that kind of works. Apple – you still suck.

Dutch courts going the way of shut the fuck up

A Dutch forum – internetoplichting.nl – where you can post if you’ve been scammed or otherwise treated badly by an internet shop, has been held responsible for the posts depicting Trendylaarzen as a crap shop.
Even though the court didn’t rule there were any inaccuracies in the posts, they did say that there was malicious intent because some of the site admins were writing on the topic and were participating in building up the pressure on Trendylaarzen.
For me, I fail to see the difference between a site admin and a regular visitor: as long as there was no libel, they should be able to post whatever they like.

Zypad wrist computer

With the Zypad device, which runs a Linux operating system, one can access a remote host system through integrated wired or wireless interfaces. The unit boasts a special fiberglass-reinforced nylon-magnesium alloy case for maximum durability and minimum weight.

Features include “802.11 and Bluetooth/Zigbee interfaces, a GPS receiver, electronic compass, biometric fingerprint sensor, and a tilt- and dead-reckoning system that detects the position of the user’s arm and sets the system to standby mode when the arm is hanging down beside the body.”

Sniffing keyboard keystrokes

The Ecole Polytechnique team did its work over the air. Using an oscilloscope and an inexpensive wireless antenna, the team was able to pick up keystrokes from virtually any keyboard, including laptops. “We discovered four different ways to recover the keystroke of a keyboard,” said Matin Vuagnoux, a Ph.D. student at the university. With the keyboard’s cabling and nearby power wires acting as antennas for these electromagnetic signals, the researchers were able to read keystrokes with 95 percent accuracy over a distance of up to 20 meters (22 yards), in ideal conditions.

If pulling keystrokes out of thin air isn’t bad enough, another team has found a way to get the same kind of information out of a power socket. Using similar techniques, Inverse Path researchers Andrea Barisani and Daniele Bianco say they get accurate results, picking out keyboard signals from keyboard ground cables.
