Apple screws iphone customers… some more

It turns out that the 3.1 patch for the iphone removes tethering for any carrier that isn’t a partner of Apple. This means that if you own an officially unlocked iphone and run it on another network, you can’t use the iphone as a modem for your laptop any more.

Well done, Jobs – keep fucking your customers up the arse! They’re your fanboys, they LOVE it!

Back up your iPhone’s SMS Message Database

The instructions are here – a good plan to do this before you update. Anyway, it turns out that they’re kept in a sqlite3 file in

/var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db

if you want to do this on the iphone itself through terminal you need to apt-get install sqlite3

Then you need to convert to CSV:

sqlite3 -csv -separator ',' sms.db "select * from message;" > output.csv

rowid: A unique identifier for each message
address: The telephone number of the sender / recipient
date: The Unix Timestamp of when the message was sent / received
text: The message content
flags: 3 Indicates that the message was sent, 2 indicates that it was received
group_id: Indicates the conversation the message belongs to (messages are linked together via groups and the group_member table).

If you use SSH to back up and replace the files, make sure you keep the permissions right:
-rw-r--r-- 1 mobile mobile 61440 Sep 2 22:35 /var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak, ECID Grabber & iBEC and iBSS Grabber

In order to futureproof your iPhone upgrade, you need to get and save your ECID, iBEC and IBSS.

In order to do this you need the following program:

difrnt Β» Blog Archive Β» ECID Grabber & iBEC and iBSS Grabber.

You can then follow these instructions from step 6 on – the grabber will do the temp file watching for you. You will then have your iBEC and iBSS files. NB If you only get the iBEC file, you can also look in C:\Users\All Users\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Temporary Files\Firmware\dfu – they might both be in there…

In order to get your ECID:

Check hackint0sh.org ECID instructions

NB. the box purplera1n.com is invisible (black) above the donate button.

In order to jailbreak you need your ipsw file and Redsnow. Redsnow will ask you for the location of the ipsw file (if you downloaded the update from Apple that would be: users\”USERNAME”\appdata\roaming\apple computer\itunes\) and works with 3.0.1

iPhone virus: Patch!

Who said Apples don’t get virusses? In a one character SMS message, an attacker can take over your phone entirely: turn on or off the camera, send the contacts list, dial out, etc etc etc.

Oddly enough the first people to patch it are the people Apple is intent on stopping from working on software for the iPhone: the jailbreakers!

SoundAMP hearing aid app for iPhone

“you run the app with your earbuds plugged in, and then sit back and enjoy listening to the sweet sounds of whatever’s going on around you — only louder. The app allows you to control volume and tone, and you can also replay the last 30 seconds of what you’ve been hearing — in case you missed something particularly juicy”

Now, considering I have a set of Sure headphones I use for running and I run on streets, this is very handy: not being able to hear any traffic feels dangerous!

Volume Boost – Make your iPhone Louder

Volume boost is a pretty sweet tweak that makes your audio louder. When you download this you don’t get any preference app, you have to enable it through Winterboard. This tweak can be found using the ModMyI source. This can be used on any firmware, which may be useful for those who have yet to upgrade to 3.0. I have downloaded this application and have noticed a BIG difference in volume.. – Ty’s Iphone Help

Jailbreak iPod Touch 3.0

Quite cleverly, before the release of iphone OS 3.0, it has allready been jailbroken. OS 3 will finally add such basic concepts such as MMS and copy and paste – only around 2 years after the release of the thing – as well as a search feature. Wow. Basic functionalities. About bloody time. Oh. And if you’re an ipod touch user, you’ll have to pay $9.99 for the privelige of having something that kind of works. Apple – you still suck.
