US turns wikileaks into fiasco. Terrorism is dropped.

Yup – instead of just having been embarrassed and pointing out that every country makes the same kind of internal assessments, that these have to be brutally honest internally in order to be effective and then getting on with it, the US is flipping.

H Clinton, the mad spying control freak, is now claiming it’s an ‘attack’ on the ‘whole international community’. Who is she kidding? And now a senator wants WikiLeaks to be considered a terrorist organisation.

It’s not like the information released was really a big deal. Embarrasing? Yes. Devastating? No.

Get a grip, US. We’ve had enough of being dragged into vague, undefinable wars by you. Use diplomacy, not violence, for once.

Partial reversal of aging achieved in mice

“When we flipped the telomerase switch on and looked a month later, the brains had largely returned to normal,” said DePinho. More newborn nerve cells were observed, and the fatty myelin sheaths around nerve cells — which had become thinned in the aged animals — increased in diameter. In addition, the increase in telomerase revitalized slumbering brain stem cells so they could produce new neurons.

To show that all this new activity actually caused functional improvements, the scientists tested the mice’s ability to avoid a certain area where they detected unpleasant odors that they associated with danger, such as scents of predators or rotten food. They had lost that survival skill as their olfactory nerve cells atrophied, but after the telomerase boost, those nerves regenerated and the mice regained their crucial sense of smell.

“One of the most amazing changes was in the animals’ testes, which were essentially barren as aging caused the death and elimination of sperm cells,” recounted DePinho. “When we restored telomerase, the testes produced new sperm cells, and the animals’ fecundity was improved — their mates gave birth to larger litters.”

The telomerase boost also lengthened the rodents’ life spans compared to their untreated counterparts — but they did not live longer than normal mice, said the researchers.

How Google and MS load so quickly: they cheat on slow start

Basically they’re violating RFC-3390.

You’re supposed to check the speed the receiver can handle before sending another packet, and then up your speed if it’s good, or stabilise if it isn’t. What they do is instead of waiting for the return packet confirming or denying the uprate in speed is good (initial window / IW), they pump multiple packets into the reciever straight up.

Google pumps around 8 or 9, Microsoft pumps in around 43(!). They’re not the only ones doing this: Amazon, Facebook, Cisco, they all do this!

Ben Strong’s Blog: Google and Microsoft Cheat on Slow-Start. Should You?.

This is why you need courts to make decisions – torrent-finder.com taken down with no recourse to law.

Why is this strange? Well, torrent-finder doesn’t host any torrents, or contain a database with the location of torrents – it doesn’t even show any torrents: it shows torrent finding sites in iframes (ie outside of its own site).

It’s been taken down unilaterally by ICE in the *cough* land of the *cough* free, the US.

Windows 7 Phone Jailbroken

Windows Phone 7 unlocker released

Today we have an exciting breakthrough for the Windows Phone 7 homebrew community – the ability for anyone to unlock a WP7 device without a Marketplace developer account.

Unlocking allows the sideloading of experimental applications that would otherwise can’t be published to the Marketplace, such as those which access private or native APIs.

We’ve taken the pain out of the process involved and put together a super simple executable that will allow anyone to unlock any WP7 device on the market using a USB cable and just a couple clicks. This tool is completely safe and reversible for the phone. The app even allows you to relock the phone.

Disinfectant using light

The technology decontaminates the air and exposed surfaces by bathing them in a narrow spectrum of visible-light wavelengths, known as HINS-light.

Clinical trials at Glasgow Royal Infirmary have shown that the HINS-light Environmental Decontamination System provides significantly greater reductions of bacterial pathogens in the hospital environment than can be achieved by cleaning and disinfection alone, providing a huge step forward in hospitals’ ability to prevent the spread of infection.

This novel decontamination technology was discovered and developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts, Professor Scott MacGregor (Electrical Engineer), Professor John Anderson and Dr Michelle Maclean (Microbiologists) and Professor Gerry Woolsey (Optical Physicist.)

Professor Anderson said: “The technology kills pathogens but is harmless to patients and staff, which means for the first time, hospitals can continuously disinfect wards and isolation rooms.

“The system works by using a narrow spectrum of visible-light wavelengths to excite molecules contained within bacteria. This in turn produces highly reactive chemical species that are lethal to bacteria such as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, and Clostridium difficile, known as C.diff.”

Schiphol Security chief criticises EU approach to air safety

He’s also pissed off with all the technology being put into airports and the ignoring of human intelligence.

Marijn Ornstein, the manager of security policy at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, said: “If you look at all the recent terrorist incidents, the bombs were detected because of human intelligence not because of screening … If even a fraction of what is spent on screening was invested in the intelligence services we would take a real step toward making air travel safer and more pleasant.

Tory councillor arrested over Twitter stoning post

AND if Ireland isn’t crazy enough, England is just as mad – on the same day!

Gareth Compton tweeted this:
“Can someone please stone Yasmin Alibhai-Brown to death? I shan’t tell Amnesty if you don’t. It would be a blessing, really”

And got arrested. For inciting violence.

People, what is wrong with the world?!

Yasmin is going all sorts of nuts all over this – if it was a joke then, maybe we can retweet it more seriously now: she deserves to be stoned to death over the way she’s got her panties in a knot about this. It would be a blessing.

BBC News – Tory councillor arrested over Twitter stoning post.

Twitter prankster found guilty of … something

OK, so you’re frustrated because you go to some airport and it’s closed. So you joke ‘I’m gonna blow the place sky high’ on Twitter. Does anyone expect the next step to be: you get arrested and found guilty?!

It happened to Paul Chambers in Ireland.

So people are massively retweeting his message in protest. This is inanity – what kind of justice system do they have in Ireland?!

Ubuntu Unity moving from X.org to Wayland

This is a really risky move, as they risk alienating their Gnome supporters as well as all the buggyness that a shift from X (a stable platform) implies. However, they want more scaleability to the portable and phone markets and they can’t do it without building a new interface from the ground up like IOS and Android and WinPhone 7 are doing. You need integrated touch, 3D, etc. Very curious how this’ll pan out.

Howto: hack the OV-chipkaart

Genoeg rode tekst, laten we beginnen

Hardware en software

Hardware

4. make

5. make install

4. make

5. make install

MFOC trying default keys

How To Directly Tether Your Camera To An iPad

One of the problems of an Ipad is that it doesn’t have a filesystem, which means you can’t copy files directly to it from your camera, so you still need the laptop. Using the Eye-Fi Connect card turns your camera into a wi-fi device. Jailbreaking your ipad / iphone and installing MyWi turns it into a wireless hotspot. The app Shuttersnitch allows you to then copy files directly from your camera to your ipad.
